Some of the most common reasons for an Air Conditioner repair:

Clogged air filters

A clogged air filter can dramatically change the air flow in the Air Conditioner. This causes the air conditioning unit to work harder and use more electricity than necessary. A severely clogged filter literally suffocates the unit and stresses the motor. Air filters like pleated baghouse filters should be checked regularly.

Thermostat failure

If the batteries in the thermostat are dead, then the air conditioner will not work. Also, if the thermostat is not calibrated properly, it could send confusing signals to the AC causing undue wear on parts and also causing the unit to turn on and off intermittently.

General Cleaning

Outdoor debris can clog the unit, interfere with fan blades and cause the AC to stop working. Dirty coils also block the airflow and don’t allow the air to reach the coils’ cooling mechanism.

Capacitor

A capacitor is a device that ensures proper operating voltage is delivered to the fan motor and compressor. If the capacitor is out of range, it could cause damage to the motors as electricity is not properly flowing to them or out of them.

Contactors

A contactor is a switch that is used by the condenser to turn on and off. If this device wears out, the condenser will not work or conversely, will not turn the unit off when the thermostat tells it to do so.

Refrigerant Charge

If the refrigerant is not balanced properly, then you may not be getting the proper amount of cooling from the air conditioning system. If the system is undercharged, there may be a leak in the refrigerant lines or microfracture. An undercharged system will not cool effectively. An overcharged system can shorten the life of the condenser by causing undue wear on the compressor motor.

Electrical Connections

Some ac repair could be as simple as reconnecting or tightening electrical components in the 240 and 24 volt circuits. Bad electrical connections can also create wear on the unit’s capacitors, contactors and circuit breakers.
